Dress Code Guidelines

General Directives: The dress code went into effect August 2004 and remains in effect for all students in grades K-8. Any dress code item may be bought at any store as long as they follow guidelines. Dress code outfits will take the place of school “dress-up” days. Dress code slacks, skirts, or jumpers must be worn on dress up days. Shorts, caprice, skorts will not be allowed on dress up days. Dress code slacks, Capris, pants, shorts, or skorts must be worn on PE days. No jumpers or skirts. There will be occasional dress-down days. Students may wear St. Denis t-shirts or other clothes that are somewhat like our current dress code. Further explanation is in the back of the handbook. Pants or Capris may only be solid black, navy, khaki (in the tan family) colors. They should be cotton twill or cotton blend fabric with a zip front. No tight-fitting, shiny, leather, leather-like, warm up pants, spandex or sweats may be worn. They may have cuffs. No denim. No low-rise or “hip-hugger” pants. They may have a flap on the back pocket. Ankle slits must be sewn in not cut. Belts must be worn with pants that have belt loops. Only solid brown, black, navy or tan belts may be worn. Shorts or skorts may be worn at any time with the exception of some dress-up days. Shorts must be “uniform style” walking shorts. Both must be no shorter than 2” above the knee. Note that some skorts run short. Please be aware of the minimum length. They must follow all other guidelines for pants. Shirts must be any plain, solid-color, and polo-style, short or long sleeved shirt. (Polo-style – pull over, collar, 2 or 3 button placket front, long tail.) They may not have an insignia on them. No oxfords. Shirts must be long enough to be tucked in and remain tucked in at all times. Solid color t-shirts may be worn under the polo shirt. Jumpers and/or Skirts must be only solid black, navy or khaki. They may be no shorter than 2” above the knee. They may be longer than the knee. They should be cotton twill or cotton blend fabric. Refer to the Pants section for other fabric guidelines. Sweatshirts may only be solid color, crew neck. Collared polo shirts must be worn under them. They may not have an insignia, hood or be oversized. Sweaters may only be solid color, crew neck, or button-up cardigan. Collared polo shirts must be worn under them. They may not have an insignia, hood or be oversized. No vests. Jackets must be hung in closets except during recess. They may not be worn during class time. Socks may be any solid color as long as they can be seen above the shoes. Shoes – Sensible shoes must be worn at all times. They may be tennis shoes, slip-ons, or tie-shoes. They must have the back and the toe in them. The soles must be non-marring. Hair – Must be neat, clean, and natural color. Girls may have light highlighting and hair must be kept out of the eyes. Boy’s hair must be shorter than the collar in the back and the top of the ear on the sides. Bangs must be above the eyebrow. Cosmetics may not be worn during school hours. Blemish cover-up may be worn in moderation. Nails must be clean and kept short (so as not to scratch others). Only clear or light colored polish may be worn. Fake fingernails may not be worn.
